Fiscal Year 2021 Annual Report

July 1 2020 - June 30 2021

A Note from the Executive Director

We hunkered down in March of 2020 without knowing what the next year would look like. Then something incredible happened.

With the added time offered by less events and meetings, the team at SHAN invested in creating the things we had long dreamed about. During a global pandemic, we launched four new programs (see them below) and retained our four-member staff team at normal working hours. Yes, we saw our first financial loss in my 6 years with the organization, but we had faithfully saved for this type of event.

We are grateful for your faithfulness through a difficult year, and are excited to continue to grow as we serve all those locally impacted by human trafficking.

Courtney Schmackers, Executive Director

EDUCATE

We cannot respond appropriately to an issue as complex as human trafficking without first having a right understanding of what it is, how it happens, and who it impacts. SHAN believes education opens minds to care for all those impacted by human trafficking and can be a catalyst for connecting community resources with organizational needs.

In 2020 291 people tuned in to our virtual training offered in August, November and February through Zoom webinars. This was our first digital adaptation to our traditionally live trainings. Participants still got the opportunity to connect with our network of partners through a panel, pictured above. By expanding our reach we were able to educate people from out of state and internationally (UK).

Virtual trainings offered an accessible way to continue to equip corporate and community groups with the information to identify and report suspected cases of human trafficking. 140 community members tuned in to off-site training programs.

NEW We’ve been dreaming of a way to reach the population most susceptible to human trafficking: At-risk youth and domestic minors. In partnership with the Harry C. Moores Foundation and Xcelerate Media SHAN adapted our time-tested Anti-Human Trafficking Training curriculum specifically for pre-teens and teens. We look forward to introducing the course in area schools and any space where prevention can keep cases of human trafficking from ever developing.

NEW Labor trafficking is more difficult to identify, but still very much present in our community. We augmented the 20-minute labor trafficking segment from our training and expanded it into a 90-minute course. We launched our first labor-trafficking specific training virtually in January 2021 and 67 people tuned in.

NEW As COVID-19 social distancing guidelines lifted we introduced the Fair & Free Workshop, an event hosted at Gravity in Franklinton that combined our labor trafficking curriculum with a vendor fair and food truck. 66 participants considered how they might specifically respond to human trafficking while connecting with 11 local vendors.

This specialty course equips people looking to work closely with those impacted by human trafficking. In partnership with the Columbus Care Coalition SHAN offered one training which prepared 43 participants to respond holistically. Participants are ready to directly serve those impacted by human trafficking through SHAN’s care programming.

ADVOCATE

We recognize the importance of both micro and macro level responses to tackling human trafficking. SHAN acts as a resource to organizations by advocating for policy and partners so that those impacted by human trafficking have access to the best community resources. Together we are able to connect and meet needs in creative ways.

SHAN staff diligently connected with our partner organizations in the midst of the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We asked, “What do you need? How can we make that happen?” By drawing close we supported existing relationships and stabilized faltering programs.

On September 2nd, 2020 Courtney provided expert testimony in support of HB 431 which provides the same protections to 16- and 17- year old victims of human trafficking as other minors. It passed the Ohio Senate in December and came into effect on April 12, 2021. In March 2021 SHAN testified before the Columbus City Council as a proponent for increased penalties to those purchasing sex. The Council approved funding to local agencies creatively responding to the demand for solicitation, but has not yet passed the increased penalties.

CARE FOR THOSE IMPACTED

Our vision is to see all those impacted by human trafficking restored into society. We act as a resource by providing support groups for survivors, thrivers, and solicitors. Our hope is to not only care for those who have already experienced exploitation, but to prevent human trafficking before it ever starts.

Nine survivors of human trafficking attended She Has A Name’s Dream Session to discover what comes next. The inaugural April Thacker Dream Scholarship awarded $3,000 to Stephanie Rollins to provide reliable transportation to her job as a trauma counselor at The Salvation Army. She Has A Name joined forces with the City of Columbus through a Reimagining Safety grant, our first-ever governmental funding. Together we will provide 5 $5,000 Dream Scholarships to survivors of human trafficking.

She Has A Name awarded a financial scholarship in June 2021 to a survivor completing her Masters degree.

Thrivers Group.jpg

SHAN gathers thrivers monthly for social and spiritual support. The group enjoyed swimming and dinner at a SHAN advocate’s home: “It’s often our needed oasis. Something about getting out of the city and floating brings peace,” shares SHAN Program Director Katie Lee.

In partnership with Lower Lights Ministries we offer a bi-weekly spiritual support group to the women in their program. The group resumed in June 2021 following a winter suspension.

Together with Complete Education Services LLC we offered two live John Schools in September 2020 and April 2021 with a total of 17 participants. In total $1,647 was raised through entry fees to be reinvested in care resources. Channel 10 featured SHAN’s John School as a response to the demand for solicitation in an August 2021 story. We look forward to offering quarterly programs.

Financial Stewardship

We are grateful for the continued investment from our community: your gifts fund freedom! The following figures represent our financial health during our 2020-21 fiscal year from July 1st, 2020 through June 30th, 2021. Although we saw a slight financial loss for the year due to the impacts of the pandemic, we had faithfully saved for this event. At the same time, we made significant investments in our programming and platforms that will enable us to create transformative impact for years to come. In the next year we hope to share the online platform with vulnerable youth, reach more strugglers and solicitors through robust care resources, and provide more scholarships for survivors of human trafficking.
